New research chair in South Africa announced

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has issued an international call for applications for a research chair for mathematics with specialisation in data science in South Africa. The deadline for applications is 15 January 2016.

This call is aimed at highly qualified postdoctoral academics from any country who have conducted application-related research in the field of mathematics with specialisation in data science and have experience in training students and doctoral candidates. The internationally advertised professorship will be attached to the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in South Africa. The new chair was created to help strengthen university education and research in mathematics in Africa. At the same time it will promote networking between AIMS and German universities and between the individual AIMS centres in Africa.

AIMS is a pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate education, research and outreach in the field of mathematics and related sciences. It was founded in 2012 by the AIMS-Next Einstein Initiative (NEI) which has set itself the goal of establishing and networking a total 15 such supra-regional centres of excellence in Africa by the year 2020. The aim is to promote young African academics and strengthen Africa’s independence in the sciences, education and industry. The new research chair at AIMS South Africa will be endowed with a total of €628,000 for a period of four years.

The closing date for applications is 15 January 2016.

The chair is part of the German Research Chairs initiative and is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The Humboldt Foundation made its first successful appointment to a professorship through this programme back in 2011. The Senegalese Humboldtian and mathematician Mouhamed Moustapha Fall was recruited in the course of an international selection procedure for the newly founded AIMS in Senegal. The Humboldt Foundation plans to set up further research chairs at AIMS centres in the next three years.
