Hezekiah Wardwell Fellowship

Submit an application for a Hezekiah Wardwell Fellowship if you are a young, highly-gifted musician or musicologist from Spain. The Fellowship allows you to pursue further training or advanced studies at a college of music or conservatoire in Germany, mentored by an established music teacher.

Even before you apply to the Humboldt Foundation, please come to an agreement with the college of music of your choice on admission and academic mentoring if you should be accepted.

Spanish musicians and musicologists may apply to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation directly. The deadline is 10 January each year. The Humboldt Foundation grants up to ten Fellowships annually which are financed from the bequest of Hezekiah C. Wardwell, an American citizen who died in 1964.

  2. Applications may be submitted up to three years after completing musical or musicological training at the latest.
  3. The Humboldt Foundation expects candidates to contact a recognised music teacher or specialist in Germany before submitting an application and to obtain a binding agreement that they can be admitted as students and will receive academic mentoring.
  4. Applicants should have a good knowledge of German.

Preference will be given to candidates who have not yet had an opportunity to study in Germany. Candidates who have been in Germany for more than twelve months at the time of application are not eligible to apply for a Wardwell Fellowship.

Applications may be sent to the following address at any time:

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Selection Department,
Jean-Paul-Str. 12, 53173 Bonn, Germany

The deadline for applications is 10 January each year.

From the applications submitted, a Selection Committee chooses suitable candidates to be invited to an audition. The candidates will usually receive the relevant notification in mid-May. The audition and subsequent final selection by the Selection Committee take place once a year, usually at the end of May or beginning of June in Madrid.

Even if the Selection Committee approves the application, a Wardwell Fellowship can only be granted if the candidate has binding confirmation of a place at a German college of music, conservatoire or university.

Reviewing the applications takes about five months, from receipt of the application to the Selection Committee decision immediately following the Selection Meeting.
