Extension of German-Turkish symposium series

With its “Turkish-German Frontiers of Research Symposium” series, the Humboldt Foundation promotes exchange between German and Turkish researchers. The programme is now to be extended by two years to look into the subject of digitalisation.

A funding agreement to this effect was signed by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and Stiftung Mercator in October. The symposia are financed by the private Koç University from the Turkish side, and Stiftung Mercator from the German side. The Turkish-German Frontiers of Research Symposia (TUGFOSS) give researchers the opportunity to engage in professional and personal exchange and expand their own academic network. Two symposia are to be held in 2019 and 2020 to shine a light on the effects of the digital age. These are “Where do we go? Turkey and Germany and the Digital Revolution” and “Moving forward: The impact of the digital revolution on societies”.

Inclusion in the education system

At the last symposium in Potsdam between the 27th and 30th September 2018, Turkish and German researchers discussed the topic “Inclusion, Exclusion and Mobilisation”. One focus here was on inclusion measures in the field of education, such as bringing together pupils of different origins in school classes. Other topics included the forms and impacts of populism in Germany and Austria, among other places, the subjective well-being of Turkish immigrants in the Netherlands and the latest developments in the field of gender research in Germany and Turkey.

Funding for further collaboration

The intense discussions motivated many participants to engage in new collaborative research ventures. For example, the Humboldt Foundation's CONNECT programme offers further collaboration opportunities for participants of the Turkish-German Frontiers of Social Science Symposium. Under this programme it is possible to obtain funding for working stays of up to 30 days in Germany and Turkey.

Turkish-German Frontiers of Research Symposia

The Turkish-German Frontiers of Research Symposia form part of the bi-national Frontiers of Research Symposia series, which the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation organises on an annual basis together with the USA, Japan, UK, China, India, Israel and Brazil.
