The guests at the conference Academic Freedom and Responsibility Toward Society – Who Decides What Science We Do? included Pierre Haski, President of Reporters sans frontières, and Catharine Stimpson, Chair of the Scholars at Risk Network Board, who stressed the connection between freedom of the media and academic freedom.
The participants discussed political developments that put pressure on freedom and the formation of pluralistic opinions in many countries and even threaten academic freedom in many places. In this connection, Hans-Christian Pape, President of the Humboldt Foundation, stressed the importance of an exchange that goes beyond science: "I think we can only secure our academic freedom in the long run if we enter into a dialogue with society, remain open-minded to justified challenges, even from non-specialists, and keep debating the role science and research should play within societies."
