Alexander von Humboldt Foundation reaffirms involvement in Brazil

Meeting in Brazil, the presidents of the Humboldt Foundation and CAPES, the Brazilian funding agency for higher education, set the stage for a continuation of their present collaboration.

On 13 May, in advance of a Humboldt Kolleg in Brazil, the President of the Humboldt Foundation, Hans-Christian Pape, met with Anderson Ribeira Correia, the President of CAPES, the Brazilian funding agency for higher education, to prepare the extension of the two bodies’ joint fellowship programme.

Network and junior researchers to be strengthened

The Humboldt Foundation has collaborated with CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior) for many years now: in connection with granting research awards based on reciprocity, with the Capes-Humboldt Research Fellowship for highly qualified Brazilian researchers and with conferences such as the Brazilian-German Frontiers of Science and Technology Symposia (BRAGFOST).
The two organisations now want to extend their joint fellowship programme by five years and improve the structure of the support provided for post docs returning to their home countries. The details of their continuing collaboration are now being worked out. Through the extension of this collaboration, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation wants to help internationalise young researchers in Brazil and strengthen its network of excellence in this important research and industry location in Latin America.

Kolleg on the interfaces between neuroscience and humanities

The Humboldt Kolleg “Neurosciences and humanities: Is it possible to foster mutual learning?” was held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from 14-17 May. The Humboldt Foundation’s President, Hans-Christian Pape – himself a neuroscientist and expert on the neurophysiological foundations of emotional behaviour – held the opening address on the subject of "Rhythms of Fear in the Brain. Mechanisms and Impact of an Emotion".
The specialist conference with around 100 international participants also served to promote regional and discipline-based networking between Brazilian Humboldt alumni and arouse young researchers’ interest in the Foundation’s programmes and in Germany as a location for conducting research. Humboldt Kollegs are organised by Humboldt alumni associations or individual Humboldtians on location who also determine the content. Support is provided by the Foundation.
