My Husband Backs Me Up

I have never felt disadvantaged because of my gender. On the contrary, my academic teachers have always given me great support. Whenever I did sense any reservations, it was on the part of other women who didn’t like the fact that I’m young and have achieved such good results so quickly.

I feel that in Russia, men and women can do research on an equal footing. Many of my female Russian colleagues are not married or they’re divorced. Often they have children late in life or not at all. I have witnessed the same situation in Germany. Therefore I think it is a great blessing for women to have their husband’s support. One of the most important things for me is my partner’s acceptance of my lifestyle. My husband has no problem with me working twelve hours in the library and not being able to take care of the kids and the household.

Dr. Irina Galynina worked as a Postdoc at St. Petersburg State University of Culture and Art. The mother of two children is currently a Humboldt Research Fellow at the Institute for Greek and Latin Languages and Literature at the Freie Universität Berlin.
