Fraunhofer-Bessel Research Award for outstanding achievements in applied research

The Humboldt Foundation and the Fraunhofer Society jointly grant up to three Fraunhofer-Bessel Research Awards annually to internationally acknowledged academics from non-European countries.

The award is valued at 45,000 EUR and is granted for an outstanding performance in applied research. Apart from recognising existing achievements it also aims to promote sustainability: Award winners are expected to continue producing cutting-edge results which will have a seminal influence on their discipline beyond their immediate field of work. They are invited to spend from six months to a year cooperating on a research project of their own choice with specialist colleagues at one of the Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany.

Academics of all disciplines who completed their doctorates less than twelve years prior to the date of nomination are eligible to be granted the award. Nominations should be submitted by the head of institute or senior academics at an institute belonging to the Fraunhofer Society.

Selection committee meetings are held twice a year. Nominations for spring 2010 may be submitted immediately.
