The Academy Professor Prize of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) is being awarded to the Humboldtian Birgit Meyer this year. The German religious studies scholar and anthropologist is receiving the award in recognition of her achievements in the research work she has conducted to date. The award, totalling one million euros, will allow the Humboldtian to finance a project of her choice for a period of five years. The award ceremony will be held in the Trippenhuis, the KNAW headquarters in Amsterdam, on 25 June 2015.

Birgit Meyer is a professor at the University of Utrecht and conducts research there on religion from a socio-cultural, global and material perspective. Her work combines religious studies and cultural anthropology and shows that a thorough knowledge of religion can improve our understanding of the world. In 2012, Meyer received the Anneliese Maier Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for her research.

Each year, two researchers are awarded the Academy Professor Prize of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, one in the humanities or social sciences and the other in the natural, technical or life sciences. The award comes with one million euros and is conferred in recognition of the award-winner’s lifetime achievements.
