New research chair in Ghana announced

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has issued an international call for applications for a research chair for “Mathematics and its Applications” in Ghana. The deadline for applications is 15 July 2015.

The new chair was created to help strengthen university education and research in mathematics in Africa. At the same time it will promote networking between the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Ghana and German universities and between the individual AIMS centres in Africa. The internationally advertised professorship for “Mathematics and its Applications” will be attached to AIMS Ghana.

AIMS is a pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate education, research and outreach in the field of mathematics and related sciences. It was founded in 2012 by the AIMS-Next Einstein Initiative (NEI) which has set itself the goal of establishing and networking a total 15 such supra-regional centres of excellence in Africa. The aim is to promote young African academics and strengthen Africa’s independence in the sciences, education and industry. The new research chair at AIMS Ghana will be endowed with a total of €560,000 for a period of four years.

The call for applications is aimed at postdocs from any country who have demonstrably conducted application-related researched in the field of mathematics and have several years of experience in training students and (ideally) doctoral candidates. The deadline for applications for the research chair is 15 July 2015. The chair is part of the German Research Chairs programme initiative and is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The Humboldt Foundation made its first successful appointment to a professorship through this programme back in 2011. The Senegalese Humboldtian and mathematician Mouhamed Moustapha Fall was recruited in the course of an international selection procedure for the newly founded AIMS in Senegal. The Humboldt Foundation plans to set up three more research chairs at AIMS Centres in South Africa, Cameroon and Tanzania. Collaboration with AIMS Ghana is part of the Humboldt Foundation’s efforts to strengthen cooperation with transition and developing countries.
