Helmut Schwarz accompanying Germany’s President Gauck on trip to South Korea

While in South Korea the President of the Humboldt Foundation lobbies for support for basic research and personal scientific excellence.

The President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Helmut Schwarz, is currently accompanying Germany’s President Joachim Gauck as a member of his delegation during his trip to South Korea. On the 13th of October, Schwarz attended, together with Gauck and other high-ranking representatives of the research community and industry, the Science and Innovation Conference in Seoul at the invitation of the German Embassy.

Speaking to an audience of more than 600 guests, Schwarz underscored how important it is to fund individuals on a long-term basis and support basic research in order for innovative ideas to flourish. Scientific progress, Schwarz noted, occurs only through the achievements of individual persons, and this requires giving them space, freedom and trust to develop. Looking at South Korea as a location for science, Schwarz praised the country’s successful about-face: following a long period of being geared to markets and products, it has shifted its focus to funding basic research. This move has dramatically increased the potential for scientific excellence in South Korea, Schwarz pointed out.

The German Embassy in Seoul hosted a scientific conference for the seventh time together with the Alumni-Netzwerk Deutschland-Korea (AdeKo - Germany-South Korea Alumni Network) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and other German and South Korean collaborative partners as part of the Joint Korean-German Conference series. This conference series is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, DAAD, South Korean partners and German businesses with branch offices in South Korea.
