2015 Max Planck Research Award conferred today in Berlin

This year’s award winners Hans Joas and Bryan S. Turner will be honoured by the Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Education and Research, Stefan Müller, the President of the Max Planck Society, Martin Stratmann, and the President of the Humboldt Foundation, Helmut Schwarz.

What is the significance of religion in our day? How can the universal validity of human rights be justified? What ensures cohesion in multicultural societies? Hans Joas from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Bryan S. Turner from the City University of New York are being presented with the 2015 Max Planck Research Award for their explanations and proposed solutions to such questions. The award winners will each receive €750,000. This will support them with their future research efforts, especially with regard to international cooperation.

The focus topic of this year’s Max Planck Research Award “Religion and Modernity - Secularization, Social and Religious Plurality” is not just of academic interest but also highly topical politically and socially. The Max Planck Research Award is one of the most generously endowed science prizes in Germany. It is financed by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, and awarded annually by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft to one scientist working abroad and one working in Germany. The call for nominations rotates on an annual basis between subfields within the natural and engineering sciences, life sciences and humanities.
