Humboldtian Christoph Ribbat at Campus Talks

What our visits to restaurants reveal about modern society

The Humboldtian Christoph Ribbat will spend face-to-face time with the Campus Talks audience on 12 January. Researchers explain their work in a nutshell during the programme which is broadcast on ARD-alpha, the education channel of the ARD television company. Each visitor has 13 minutes to explain the focus of his or her research to an audience of laypersons - without the help of PowerPoint charts or teleprompters: They must make their presentation without notes.

Christoph Ribbat is professor for American literature and culture at the Department of English and American Studies at the University of Paderborn. In addition to contemporary literature, cultural history, photography/visual culture, journalism and sports studies, Dr Ribbat’s fields of research include “food studies”. Here he examines, for example, the history of the restaurant ‒ which he calls a “mirror of society”. During his Campus Talk the former Feodor Lynen Research Fellow explains why restaurants are about much more than just food and what eating out reveals about modern society.

ARD-alpha is Germany’s only educational TV channel. The station broadcasts classic educational television programmes such as “Telekolleg” and language courses, shows and magazine programmes on science, history, art and discussion formats like Campus Talks. The list of Humboldtians who were guests of the Campus Talks show prior to Christoph Ribbat includes former research fellow Stefani Engelstein, the Humboldt Professors Matthias Tschöp and Oliver Brock, the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award winner Samuel Wagner, the former Feodor Lynen Research Fellow Petra Schwille, the former Humboldt Research Award winner Ulrich Trottenberg and the former research fellow Heinz Oberhummer.

Broadcast dates: 12 January at 7:00 p.m., 13 January at 9:30 a.m. and 16 January at 2:30 p.m. on the ARD-alpha television channel or at any time online at www.br.de/fernsehen/ard-alpha/sendungen/campus-talks.
