Cooperation with the Science Media Center: Humboldt Foundation promotes independent, quality-based science journalism

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has become a partner of the Cologne-based Science Media Center Germany (SMC) and one of the founding members of the SMC’s Association of Friends and Sponsors. The Science Media Center promotes independent, quality-based science journalism and aims to upgrade public debate on scientific topics. To this end, it bundles information for journalists on current, socially-relevant scientific issues and delivers expertise provided by selected researchers.

“The media have to report under enormous time pressure. The Science Media Center seeks to ensure that facts are paramount and are communicated in a way that can be understood. We are pleased to be able to support this work with our network,” says Georg Scholl, head of Press, Communications and Marketing at the Humboldt Foundation. As part of the collaboration, the Foundation will promote SMC’s work in its network of more than 40,000 researchers at home and abroad and encourage members to offer their expertise in response to questions from SMC.

Members of the Humboldt Network are entitled to take part in the Center’s information events where they can gain insights into how journalists choose their topics and organise their daily work, and acquire experience in how to deal professionally with the media and media representatives.

In order to strengthen SMC’s independence both in relation to content and financing, the “Association of Friends and Sponsors of the Science Media Center Germany gGmbH” was established in Heidelberg in November 2016. In addition to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, 12 further institutions constitute the founding membership of the SMC association: the universities of Bonn, Freiburg, Heidelberg, Cologne and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the National Academy of Science and Engineering acatech, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Bayer Science & Education Foundation, Covestro Deutschland AG, the German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association (IKW) as well as the Association of German Science Journalists WPK and the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
