New research chair appointed in Africa

Marc Sedjro from Togo will take up work as the new German Research Chair for Applied Mathematics at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Centre in Tanzania in January 2018.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supports higher education and research in mathematics at the AIMS centres in Africa with the German Research Chair programme for application-oriented mathematics, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The now five Research Chairs at AIMS Centres in Senegal, South Africa, Ghana, Cameroon and Tanzania promise to generate new supraregional impetus for research in the field of applied mathematics in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a Pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate education, research and consulting in the field of mathematics and related sciences. The first AIMS Centre was founded in South Africa in 2003.

Marc Sedjro will move to the AIMS Centre Tanzania in 2018. Most recently, he has been conducting research at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia. Prior to this time, he did his doctorate at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the USA and conducted research and taught at RWTH Aachen in Germany. Sedjro's main interest revolves around, for example, questions involving fluid dynamics and mean field game theory.

The German Research Chair programme is aimed at researchers in the field of mathematics worldwide who conduct application-related research. The funding of the individual research chairs, which is initially for four years, generally totals up to €560,000. For the long term, there is a movement to establish the research chairs independently of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Chairs in Senegal, South Africa, Ghana, Cameroon and Tanzania

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has made appointments to the four chairs at the AIMS centres in Senegal (Moustapha Fall), South Africa (Bubacarr Bah), Ghana (Olivier Pamen) and Cameroon (Giselle Mophou). These appointments have been made with the aim of promoting networking between the individual AIMS centres in Africa and between the institutes and German universities on a long-term basis.
