Promoting mathematics research in Africa

Five more German Research Chairs to be filled at AIMS centres in Africa in the coming years. The first call for applications for AIMS Ruanda ends on 15 May 2020.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supports higher education and research in mathematics at the AIMS centres in Africa with the German Research Chair programme for application-oriented mathematics, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Five new research chairs for Mathematics and its Applications will be appointed at centres of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in the coming years. Each of these chairs will be funded with up to €560,000 for an initial period of four years.

AIMS is a pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate education, research and outreach in the field of mathematics.

Kick-off with call for applications for new chair at AIMS Ruanda

The Humboldt Foundation is calling for applications for the first chair at AIMS Ruanda in Kigali. Applications are open to postdoctoral mathematicians from throughout the world who have produced internationally outstanding research findings and have several years of experience teaching and conducting research and in training young scientists. Applicants are to conduct applied research on topics that could make a contribution to the development of the African continent. The closing date for applications is 15 May 2020.

Appointments already made to five German Research Chairs

In recent years, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has established five chairs at the AIMS centres in Senegal, South Africa, Ghana and Cameroon. The creation of these chairs will promote networking between the individual AIMS centres in Africa and between the institutes and their German partners on a long-term basis. Here you can find more information about the current chair holders.
