The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is committed to making its internet offerings as user friendly as possible and strives to continually improve them. Analysing statistical data on the use of our web pages and recording various technical details concerning the browsers and computers visitors to our web pages use helps us to do this. For this reason, every time our website is used and every time a page is accessed, information is temporarily stored and processed in a log file.

Specifically, the following information is recorded for every access/retrieval:

  • abbreviated IP address,
  • date and time,
  • retrieved page/name of the retrieved file,
  • address of the previously visited website (referrer/search term),
  • name and version of your browser/operating system/screen resolution (if this information is available) of your device.

In the case of users who register to create online applications or nominations, their surname, first and e-mail address, as well as optionally a user name, are additionally recorded so that they can have password-protected access to their specific application forms and their personal area in the My Humboldt client portal.

This data is analysed solely for statistical purposes and to improve the website. It is not used in any other way nor is it made available to third parties.

Please note however that when you use integrated external services - such as Google Maps for showing locations or for directions to a particular address, YouTube for videos, Twitter for thematic news feeds - your IP address and possibly other personal data are sent to the respective service provider (Google, etc.) where it may be stored and analysed. We do not assume responsibility for this.


The provider of this website uses the services of etracker GmbH, Hamburg, Germany ( to analyse usage data. Here, cookies are used which enable the statistical analysis of the use of this website by its visitors as well as the display of usage-relevant content or advertising. Cookies are small text files that are stored by the Internet browser on the user's device. etracker cookies do not contain any information that could identify a user.

The data generated with etracker is processed and stored by etracker solely in Germany by commission of the provider of this website and is thus subject to strict German and European data protection laws and standards.In this regard, etracker was checked, certified and awarded with the ePrivacyseal data protection seal of approval.

The data is processed on the legal basis of Art. 6 Section 1 lit f (legitimate interest) of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).Our legitimate interest is the optimization of our online offer and our website. As the privacy of our visitors is very important to us, etracker anonymizes the IP address as early as possible and converts login or device IDs into a unique key with which, however,no connection to any specific person can be made with. etracker does not use it for any other purpose, combine it with other data or pass it on to third parties.

You can object to the outlined data processing at any time provided it is related to your person. Your objection has no detrimental consequences for you.

You are, moreover, entitled to access comprehensive information on your data as held on the Humboldt Foundation’s servers as well as to correct or delete this data. Similarly, in accordance with Article 77 DSGVO, you have the option of complaining to the regulatory authority.

When you register to receive our newsletter, a confirmation link will be sent to the e-mail address you have indicated. Clicking on the link in the e-mail activates your newsletter subscription. Upon subscribing to our newsletter, you confirm that you have read and accept our Privacy Policy. Your personal data will be used solely for the purpose of sending you our newsletter and will not be made available to third parties. It will be retained only as long as your newsletter subscription is active. You can unsubscribe at any time via a link in the newsletter section of our homepage or in any newsletter you receive.
