Family benefits

The Humboldt Foundation can grant allowances and/or a subsidy towards health and personal liability insurance for marital partners and minor children who accompany the fellow for at least three months (without interruption) during the sponsorship period. Furthermore, the Foundation offers fellows a number of options to support them in raising their child or children. Family benefits for marital partners

  • The marital partner has to reside in Germany togehter with the fellow for at least 3 months without interruption.
  • The marital partner’s monthly earnings from salary or income in Germany may not exceed €450 gross per month.
  • Should no visa be required for the marital partner’s entry into Germany, a certified copy of the marriage certificate has to be submitted to the Humboldt Foundation.
  • Family allowance for marital partners: If the fellow is accompanied by children under 15 months of age, the Humboldt Foundation can grant this allowance only if specific prerequisites are met. Family benefits for children

  • Children must be under the age of 18 and have to reside in Germany together with the fellow for at least 3 months without interruption.
  • Should no visa be required for the children’s entry into Germany, a certified copy of their birth certificates must be submitted to the Humboldt Foundation.
  • Substitutional payment for child benefit by the Foundation: The Humboldt Foundation may grant this payment only if the German authorities have not approved payment or entitlement does not exist under German law governing child benefit (EStG or BKGG). A copy of the German authority’s notification that the application was rejected and the fellow’s residence permit must be submitted as proof.

Substitutional payment in the amount of €250 per month and per child in lieu of child benefit under German law:
