International award for research in Germany
The Alexander von Humboldt Professorship is valued at five million euros, making it the most valuable international research award in Germany. The award is granted by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
The Alexander von Humboldt Professorship is granted to internationally leading researchers of all disciplines working abroad to enable them to conduct cutting-edge research as Humboldt professors at German universities on a sustainable basis. The award money secures the financing for the first five years. Up to ten awards are granted annually.
The award amount of five million euros for researchers in experimental disciplines and €3.5 million for researchers in theoretical disciplines will essentially be channelled into setting up research groups and equipping laboratories. The researchers are also provided with an internationally competitive salary. The universities have to commit themselves to integrating the researchers and their teams into a strategic plan which offers the award winners a long-term perspective in Germany.
