Alexander von Humboldt Professorship

Information for Nominators

Universities in Germany may submit nominations; non-university research institutions in Germany may also submit a nomination together with a university that is eligible to apply for the programme. Nominations must be forwarded to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation through the Rector or President of the respective university or, where applicable, the academic leadership or boards of the non-university research institution. Self-nomination is not permitted.

The nominating institution must demonstrate how they intend to ensure that the award winner's future academic work in his or her subject area will have a crucial impact on the following:

  • honing the unique profile of the university/research institution by international standards
  • taking the university/research institution into the top league worldwide
  • achieving greater international visibility for the university/research institution
  • long-term benefit for Germany as a location for research

Furthermore, nominators must explain how they intend to continue the award winner's long-term affiliation to their institution, even after Humboldt Foundation sponsorship has come to an end (this should usually entail appointment to a W3 professorship/directorship).

If a joint nomination is submitted by several institutions, it must be made clear how the institutions intend to interact if an award is granted and which institution has authored the respective comments.

The nomination has to be submitted online. Please bear in mind that the Humboldt Foundation's administration can only initiate the external peer review procedure once the complete nomination documents have been received. The following additional documents have to be uploaded to the online nominations form:

  • List of the nominee's publications in the past ten years
  • List of five key publications from the nominee's complete works
  • Five key publication
  • Application credentials based on this template (DOCX)
  • Documents pertaining to the appointment procedure (if applicable)
  • Declarations (PDF) by the nominating university
  • Declarations (PDF) by the co-nominating research institution (if applicable)
  • Declarations (PDF) by the nominee

You can rest assured that your documents will be treated with the utmost confidentially by the Humboldt Foundation administration and the Selection Committee.

During the award winner's involvement with their institutions, the nominating institutions undertake to observe both the principles of scientific ethics and the regulations to prevent the transfer of armaments-related technology as well as to pay heed to the danger of any other illegal or undesirable transfer of knowledge. Furthermore, the Rules of Good Scientific Practice must be observed.
