Max Planck-Humboldt Research Award

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Max Planck Society redesigned their joint research award: the Max Planck-Humboldt Research Award is granted in recognition of the outstanding academic contributions of promising researchers from outside Germany and is endowed with an award money totaling €80,000. In addition, a sum of €1,500,000 is made available for a period of five years for the purpose of establishing and managing a working group in Germany as well as for other suitable innovative research formats for cooperation with specialist colleagues in Germany.

The Max Planck-Humboldt Research Award will be presented to researchers up to 15 years post doctorate and will be granted annually to one researcher from outside Germany from 2018. The focus of the award is on scientists with outstanding future potential.

The award aims at attracting outstanding and particularly innovative international researchers to German universities and research institutions for research residencies. The award winners will enjoy freedom and flexibility in organising their scientific activities and networking in Germany. The award, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, replaces the Max Planck Research Award, which was previously bestowed annually to two researchers by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Max Planck Society.

For the new Max Planck-Humboldt Research Award, a nomination committee from the Max Planck Society will identify three international candidates who have a strong interest in a research residency, which can be organised flexibly, at German institutions, preferably universities. A selection committee, which will include the Presidents of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Max Planck Society, will then select the winner from the list of nominees.

The annual award will be presented alternately in the fields of natural and engineering sciences, human sciences, and life sciences. The 2018 award will go to a researcher from the natural and engineering sciences. Self-nominations or nominations outside of the processes of the appointed nomination committee are not permitted.
