With the support of the Humboldt Foundation and the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam, the Environmental Policy Research Centre at Freie Universität Berlin organised an international "Cities and Climate Change Conference" in October 2011.

More than 80 academics from 20 countries took part in the conference. Amongst the guest speakers were Klaus Töpfer of IASS and Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker of the UN Environment Programme. Sociologist and environmental expert Avi Gottlieb of the Tel Aviv University organised the network and headed the conference. From 1988 to 1989, Gottlieb was a Humboldt Research Fellow at Freie Universität Berlin.

The conference established four working groups which will continue to identify research projects and monitor the targeted implementation of scientific insights in their respective areas: urban energy supply, low emission urban planning and architecture, energy efficient infrastructure and transport systems, the effects of climate change on public health and urban climate governance.

Detailed documentation of the conference is available online.
