Humboldt Foundation and Joachim Herz Stiftung cooperate

800,000 EUR to fund fellowships for natural scientists from Turkey

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Joachim Herz Stiftung are to cooperate in promoting scientific exchange with Turkey. To this end, the Joachim Herz Stiftung will provide funds of approximately 800,000 EUR until 2016 in order to finance a total of up to eight Humboldt research fellowships in the natural sciences. The fellows will be selected together with the applicants for regular Humboldt Research Fellowships. The cooperation will also sponsor events held in Turkey to promote scientific collaboration between Germany and Turkey and foster academic exchange in the natural sciences. The selected researchers will be invited into the network of the Joachim Herz Stiftung and visit scientific and cultural institutions in Hamburg, where the Joachim Herz Stiftung has its headquarters.

The collaboration is part of the country focus initiative on Turkey set up by the Humboldt Foundation and the Joachim Herz Stiftung to promote cooperation with a country that offers extensive research potential: Turkey has seen a much-noted increase in scientific productivity in recent years, while applications from Turkish researchers for research fellowships offered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation have been steadily declining since the late 1980s. In the past five years, the Foundation has only been able to award between three and six fellowships annually to researchers from Turkey.

With this cooperation the Joachim Herz Stiftung aims to expand its strategic focus on promoting research in the natural sciences and increasingly support international scientists and scholars as well as students and junior researchers. “The natural sciences in particular are drivers of progress in a society; they ensure its ability to innovate. Looking beyond national borders is vital in the natural sciences,” says Petra Herz, Chairwoman of the Executive Board of the Joachim Herz Stiftung.
