Winners named in competition to host Research Alumni Meetings

Ten institutions to receive €40,000 each.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation will provide 10 universities and research institutions funding to host a Research Alumni Meeting abroad. The following institutions will each receive €40,000 for this purpose: University of Bayreuth, University of Heidelberg, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, University of Kiel and University of Münster, Humboldt Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), Technische Universität Dresden and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. In addition, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) will receive funding to organise a networking meeting where universities and research institutions will have the opportunity to share experiences and information about their strategies for working with research alumni.

The institutions chosen for funding had already received an award in the past for their successful research alumni strategies and had now applied for funding to activate and expand their alumni networks in other countries by hosting conferences where regional and specialised issues are to be discussed, such as cross-country collaboration in East Africa, the role of social sciences in the wake of Brexit, collaboration with junior researchers in Japan, and funding opportunities available for German-Brazilian cooperation.

Since 2011, a total of 36 universities and research institutions have made winning submissions to the Research Alumni Strategy competitions held by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Research alumni are international researchers who have conducted research in Germany and subsequently continued their scientific or academic career in another country. These individuals can, as multipliers, serve as ambassadors of their host institution in Germany and as a source of information for young researchers and academics about the opportunities offered by a research stay in Germany.

The Research Alumni Strategies competition is part of the International Research Marketing project that is being jointly conducted by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and is part of the Research in Germany initiative. Es ist Teil der Initiative „Research in Germany“.
