Nominator's project description
Professor Joachims is an international authority in the subfield of computer science known as Machine Learning which is concerned with the automated and adaptive analysis of large volumes of data. Professor Joachims has developed a leading class of algorithms based on the so-called Support Vector Machine for analyzing objects of complex structures such as chemical molecules or textual documents. In Germany, Professor Joachims will focus on making his algorithms scale to very large data collections through the use of appropriate optimizations and approximations, and will investigate new learning paradigms such as transductive and semi-supervised learning for structured objects. |
