The Philipp Schwartz and Inspireurope Stakeholder Forum 2021 will take place online on 26 and 27 April and is convened in cooperation with the Inspireurope-Project.

The Forum will bring together up to 400 scholars, universities, NGOs, policymakers, enterprises, funders and partner organisations across Europe to explore strengthening support for researchers at risk and protections for academic freedom. The Forum will address the state of academic freedom in Belarus, Brazil, Turkey and elsewhere, and examine efforts underway at the institutional, national and European levels to support at-risk scholars and to strengthen academic freedom. The Forum will also look back at the first five years of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative, launched by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the German Federal Foreign Office in 2015 to enable threatened scholars to continue their work safely at German higher education institutions. A particular aim – pursued in cooperation with Academics in Solidarity, a mentoring programme based at Freie Universität – is to offer useful information and practical advice for at-risk scholars on working towards long-term professional perspectives, and for the mentors and administrators that are supporting them.
