Capes-Humboldt Research Fellowship

Information for hosts

The Capes-Humboldt Research Fellowship Programme is a joint fellowship programme of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Brazilian research funding organisation Capes (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior).

The programme is addressed exclusively to researchers from Brazil from all disciplines. Applications must be submitted to Capes and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The selection will be made by a selection committee, which is jointly appointed by Capes and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Any academic actively working at a research institution in Germany (university, non-university research institute etc.) may host a Capes-Humboldt Research Fellow. If a fellowship is granted, the Humboldt Foundation pays the host institution an allowance for research costs amounting to €800 per month for research fellows from the natural sciences and engineering and €500 for humanities scholars.

What are my tasks during the application phase?

  • The applicant should provide you with the following documents in good time before submitting an application to the Humboldt Foundation:
    • Curriculum vitae
    • Key publications
    • Research outline
  • The research outline must be agreed with you prior to applying. It should show the applicant’s creative potential and the innovative idea of the planned research. Requirements from the Humboldt Foundation for the applicants are the following:
    • The current state of research should first be briefly described and be supported by approximately five relevant publications from the research area (one page max.).
    • Clear description of the research questions to be examined, their originality and significance for the advancement of the research field
    • Clear description of the academic methods to be used to achieve these goals, documented by references where necessary
    • The research outline should comprise approximately five pages in all. A research outline that has not been sufficiently agreed in terms of content or methodology will generally result in rejection of the application.
  • Alongside their academic background, the quality of the key publications selected by the applicants and their future prospects, the originality of the research outline is an important aspect on which the independent peer reviewers and the Selection Committee will base their assessment of the application. It is therefore of particular importance that the research outline is independently drawn up by the applicant and not wholly or partially specified by you as the host.
  • Once you have checked the documents and agreed upon the research outline with the applicant, please prepare a statement written entirely in English using the list of questions for the host's statement and upload it to the application along with the signed confirmation of research facilities and support in a secure area. The applicant will send you the link to this area by email.
  • If the applicant wishes to undertake his or her research stay at two different host institutions, a separate statement as well as the confirmation of research facilities and support will be required from each host institution. When both hosts work at the same institute, only one confirmation of research facilities and support is needed. However, both hosts must sign and upload the (joint) statement and the data protection statement.

Please note that the applicant will only be able to submit his/her application as soon as the complete application documents including your statement and the signed confirmation of research facilities have been uploaded. We therefore recommend that you upload your documents as soon as possible to the application after having been informed by the applicant.

What happens after I have uploaded my statement and my confirmation of research facilities and support?

  • As soon as the applicant’s complete application package including your statement and confirmation of research facilities and support have been received, all documents will be subject to an external review procedure by the Humboldt Foundation and Capes. Your statement will, of course, be treated confidentially by the Humboldt Foundation and its Selection Committee.
  • The results will be published on the Capes Website directly after the selection committee meeting.
