Information in the context of the coronavirus pandemic: The Foundation is accepting applications for this alumni sponsorship measure again after a temporary pause due to lockdowns and travel restrictions. However, we will only process your application once the travel regulations for your respective home country or country of residence allow you to actually undertake the planned stay. We therefore kindly request alumni to wait with their applications until the respective restrictions have been lifted. We ask for your understanding. For additional information on frequently asked questions in the context of the pandemic please visit our FAQ on this subject.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation invites research award winners from abroad to return to Germany for a guest visit of up to a further three months. An invitation is extended to award winners who, either due to their outstanding academic work or to their important function in the academic or foreign cultural fields, are of particular importance to German science, economy and politics.

If they are invited back, the research award winners can choose both their host institution(s) and the contents and timing of their stay. If possible, within the framework of the guest visits, contact should be made with several research institutes and other institutions in Germany.

An invitation for a renewed research stay may be extended on the recommendation of an academic or member of staff at a German (research) institute or on the recommendation of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation itself. Direct applications by research award winners are not possible. Travel and living expenses are borne by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
