Nominator's project description

Professor Makoto Arai (Tsukuba University, Tokyo) has devoted many years of work to important legal aspects of modern aging societies. In doing so, he has not confined his investigations to public-law benefit schemes (under, say, pension, health or long-term care insurance), but has also addressed the challenges facing private law - the answers to be found there and the inherent possibilities for attaining viable complementarity. Prime examples are custodial law and the purpose-oriented administration of property in trust. His longstanding practical experience and wide-ranging studies of foreign legal systems have enabled Professor Arai to make essential contributions to the ongoing development of law. The Humboldt Research Prize has been awarded in honor of these topical and significant achievements, and their further advancement.
