Nominator's project description

Professor Gray is one of the most distinguished scholars in German Literature and Culture in the United States. Since 1993 he holds the Position of a Full Professor of German at the University of Washington, Seattle WA. 1993 until 2001 he also served as Chairperson of the Department of Germanics at the University of Washington. Professor Gray, whose studies are convincing in matters of theoretical work no less than in philological precision, is last but not least one of the most important scholars in the field of the history of Physiognomics and ¿body history¿ and hence in cultural history. The project he is planning for his stay in Germany (Money Matters: Economics of German Literature and Culture from 1770 to 1870) perfectly meets the intentions of German cultural studies, at the University of Regensburg and at other Institutions in Germany and will be an inspiration also for the development of Cultural Studies in Germany in general.
