Nominator's project description

Professor Herren is professor of classical philology. Within that area, his speciality is Medieval Latin, with an emphasis on Latin texts written in Ireland and England. He has published ground-breaking editions and translations of texts which are commonly regarded as particularly difficult, for example of The Hisperica Famina, of the poems of Iohannes Scottus Eriugena, and of Aldhelm's prose works. At present he is doing research on the reception of Greek and Roman mythology in the Early Middle Ages; for this enterprise he takes not only printed material into account, but also unpublished manuscripts, glosses, and commentaries.
