Nominator's project description
| Professor Houben is an internationally acclaimed specialist in medieval history. His particular areas of expertise are the History of Southern Italy, the Teutonic Order, and Christian-Muslim relations in the medieval Mediterranean. His contributions to the study of the Middle Ages are characterized by unique conceptual and methodological innovation and have opened up important new fields of research and provided access to relevant, long forgotten texts. His monographs in these fields are considered standard works. In Germany, Professor Houben will conduct research on the dynamic changes that the rise of the Ottomans brought to the late medieval world. |
