Nominator's project description

Professor Askold Ivantchik is one of the most outstanding representatives of the younger generation of Russian scholars in Ancient History, being orientalist as well as historian and archaeologist. His combination of linguistic, historic and archaeological research is even internationally unique. His inverstigations of the Kimmerians and early Scythians in the Black Sea region and in the Near East drew a completely new picture of these early nomadic tribes in the 1st millenium BC. Professor Ivantchik will now enlarge this research at the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin, concerntrating on the Greek sources about the Scythians.
