Nominator's project description

Barry Smith is the leading philosopher in this new field of information systems ontology. He has both exposed profound flaws in standard approaches to the construction of such a universal ontology, and also proposed alternative, more promising strategies. He has hereby also shown how the work of philosophical ontologists since Aristotle can have hitherto unanticipated applications in domains far removed from philosophy as traditionally conceived. Information science seeks a universal ontology -- a table of categories designed to serve as a common platform in terms of which databases and knowledge systems covering all domains of reality would become unifiable in a single framework. His project will pursue the development of a universal formal ontology designed above all for applications in the medical field and drawing on ideas of Dr. Barbara Heller and Prof. Heinrich Herre of the University of Leipzig.
