Nominator's project description
| Professor Piotr Steinkeller is a leading authority on the early periods of ancient Mesopotamia. His publications have substantially added to our current understanding of the early history of urban societies. Professor Steinkeller has dealt with central concerns such as the reconstruction of the early landscape, political history, principles of the early cuneiform writing system and, most importantly, the economy and society of Mesopotamia. During his stay in Germany he intends to work on labour in the ancient Near East, a fundamental topic for ancient society and economy, and on the historical geography of the Sumerian city of Umma and its province. |
