Nominator's project description

Professor Kono is internationally recognized for his outstanding research in International Private Law and Intellectual Property Law. In his position as Vice President and now President of the UNESCO International Council on Monuments and Sites, he made significant contributions to the international protection of cultural heritage and promoted the drafting of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. In Germany, Professor Kono focuses on the links between Japanese and German Civil Law and the relation between protecting cultural heritage and protecting trademarks, especially with regards to the comparability of protection criteria.
