Nominator's project description
| Professor Gálik is one of the last great scholars of Europe who has a universital education at his disposal. In contrast to many sinologists in East and West he has his home in many languages and traditions. Not only the quality but also the quantity of his publications may surpass many sinological institutions. Concering his discipline Professor Gálik is exemption as sinology in recent years prefers to stand on the political correct side and follow academic fashions of other disciplines. One of his great findings concerns the role of modern European literature in establishing modern Chinese literature. Many times he has shown that an understanding of Chinese literature in 20th century is impossible without sufficient knowledge of modern European languages and literatures. Something similar is true for his inside into the role which the bible plays in formation of modernity in China. Nowadays sinology be it in the East or in the West is for the most part free of religious concerns so that in most cases the religious character of Chinese modernity is not being recognized by scholars in Chinese studies. This is not true for Marián Gálik who in this respect is unique in the field of sinology. Since the seventies one can recognize that ideology plays a growing role in dealing with China. Marián Gálik is one of the few in the field who did not follow this fashion. He is a scholar sine ira et studio and in this respect he his an academic model that deserves admiration. During his stay at the Institute of Oriental- and Asian Studies, Sinology, his academic research will concentrate on "The Bible and Asian Christianity in China and Central Asia between 632 and 1405 A.D". |
