Nominator's project description
| Professor Thomas D. Seely is one of the leading sociobiologists using the honey bee colony as a model system for investigating functional organizations at the group level. He has made pioneering discoveries concerning the mechanisms of cooperation and communication, the economy of labor division, decision making processes and information processing in bee societies. The empirical studies are complemented by outstanding reviews and syntheses, most notably in his book "Wisdom of the Hive" (1995). He will collaborate with his German hosts on further developing the superorganism concept and on empirical studies in communication biology. |
