Nominator's project description

Professor Muraoka, who is holding the Chair of Hebrew Language and Literature, Israelite Antiquities and Ugaritic at the University of Leiden, is acknowledged worldwide as one of the leading experts on Semitic languages as well as on Biblical philology. He is well-known among all Semitists as the author of several excellent Hebrew, Syriac and Aramaic grammars. At the same time, he has made equally considerable contributions significant in the area of Biblical philology, above all to the study of Septuagint Greek. He is praised for his keen interest in and life-long commitment to the preparation of a scientific lexicon of the Septuagint, an absolute desideratum for Septuagint scholarship. Professor Muraoka is going to spend his sabbatical in Göttingen concentrating on Septuagint lexicography and syntax, in cooperation with other Septugint scholars who look forward to this unique opportunity.
