Nominator's project description

Professor Hochella is the scientist in the US most closely identified with setting up a completely new interdisciplinary research area now termed Mineral Surface Science. This involves the experimental and theoretical study of the reactivity of mineral surfaces with the aim of understanding the interaction of minerals with their chemical environment. He has pioneered the use of Scanning Probe Microscopies in Mineralogy and Geochemistry. His work in Münster is an electron microscope study to analyse heavy metal pollutants from acid mine drainage.
