Nominator's project description

At the world¹s largest ground-based telescopes, astronomers are increasingly able to cancel out the blurring caused by Earth¹s atmosphere and view the universe almost as sharply as if the telescopes were in outer space. Dr. Roberto Ragazzoni is a leading scientist in this challenging field of adaptive optics and atmospheric tomography. Together with the Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie in Heidelberg he will develop and test a multi-conjugate adaptive optics system for the Large Binocular Telescope in which Germany has a 25% share.
