Nominator's project description

Dr. Anne Bouloumie was the first to identify vascular endothelial cells as a target for the adipocyte-derived cytokine, leptin, and to elucidate the potential role of leptin in regulating the growth and development of new blood vessels. Dr. Bouloumie now intends to identify alternative sources of this obesity-associated cytokine within vascular cells and to demonstrate that macrophages, which play a key role in initiating arteriosclerosis, are also able to generate pathophysiologically relevant amounts of leptin.
