Nominator's project description

With Dr. Volker Deckert, the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award of the Humboldt Foundation is distributed to the world leading expert in Raman spectroscopy on the Nanometer scale. To deduce the physical and chemical constitution of organic and inorganic materials, especially at surfaces, Raman spectroscopy in the visible range offers great potential, but so far was applicable to large area systems only. Dr. Deckert now managed to chemically probe the local environments down to the 20 nm scale by combining Raman spectroscopy in the optical near-field with light amplification due to resonance enhancement via surface plasmon excitation. This novel approach offers great potential for the chemical and biological recognition of individual molecules both in nano- and biotechnology.
