Nominator's project description

The scientific achievement of Professor Vaganov is the establishment of a 10000 year tree ring chronosequence for northern Eurosiberia, and the foundation of the Russian tree ring archive, which is one out of 3 such archives world wide. Tree ring chronology is the basis for assessing climate change in the boreal and arctic region. The main finding is that not the cold temperature, but the length of the growing season determines tree growth at high latitudes. The scientific work in Germany will concentrate on the physiology of early and late wood formation, including the quantification of stable isotopes as indicator for climate change.
