Nominator's project description

Professor Zilhao's research focusses on the Stone Age Archaeology of Portugal and Spain. The first discovery of palaeolithic rock art in Portugal, the engravings of Coa Valley, and the recent discovery of a human skeleton of a Neanderthal-Homo sapiens hybride at Lager Velho rock shelter were highlights of his career as an archaeologist. His opus magnum was devoted to the huntergatherer cultures of the Portuguese Estremadura between 35.000 and 10.000 years ago. The earliest food producing economies (7000 years ago) on the Iberian penisula are another field of Professor Zilhaos research. He was director of the Protuguese Institute of Archaeology and is now Professor at Lisbon University. During his stay at the University of Cologne he is going to, together with Professor Richter, concentrate on the problem of the earliest modern humans in Central and Western Europe (around 35.000 years ago).
