Nominator's project description

Professor Othmer is an internationally outstanding expert in mathematical biology. His research covers modeling and analysis of coupled cell systems, gene regulatory networks, signal transduction, transport through membranes, calcium dynamics in neural tissue, and of development of the NIH model organism Dictyostelium discoideum. The Humboldt prize is supporting his project on a better understanding of the interplay between internal cell dynamics, cell communication and motion; a question of great importance in development and several disease states.
