Nominator's project description

Professor Helmy is well known internationally for pioneering experimental research on nanometer-sized mineral phases in magmatic sulfide melts. He developed novel experimental and analytical techniques to show that trace mineral phases crystallizing from magmatic sulfide melts grow by assembling nanometer-scale modular units. In Germany, he will continue his experimental research to understand the growth mechanisms of gold and silver crystals from hydrothermal solutions.
