Nominator's project description

Professor Fursikov works in Applied Mathematics on the optimal control of partial differential equations with applications in fluid mechanics. He is world-wide known for his scientific results in this field, and particularly for his landmark book "Optimal Control of Distributed Systems. Theory and Applications". Professor Fursikov is one of the most prominent experts on the theory of the Navier-Stokes equations and particularly on the controllability of their solutions. He is well-known by his two books (one written together with the famous Russian mathematician M.I. Vishik) which belong to the standard literature on the subject. This work is fundamental for the whole area of Flow Control. In his more recent work Professor Fursikov considers the problem of feed-back control of flows and the related question of stabilization of generically unstable solutions. This is the subject of Professor Fursikov's work during his stay at the University of Heidelberg in collaboration with the group of Professor Rannacher.
