Nominator's project description

Professor Angel Rubio has made pioneering contributions to a wide range of areas in Theoretical Physics and Theoretical Materials Science. The central goal of his work is to characterize and predict new materials and to develop novel theoretical and computational tools to achieve this goal. Most recently, Prof. Rubio has made a major contribution in biophysics related to the microscopic description of the photo-response of bio-molecules. Furthermore, as an important contribution to the scientific community, Prof. Rubio created a general-purpose computer code, called OCTOPUS, for the study of the electronic and electron-ion dynamics within time-dependent density-functional theory. For his stay in Germany, Prof. Rubio has two major research projects which he is going to carry out. In the first project he is planning to develop an ab-initio description of electronic transport through molecular devices. In this way, computers will increase in their memory and speed. The second research project is concerned with the description of the combined dynamics of electrons and ions.
