Nominator's project description

Professor Bernd Sturmfels is awarded a Humboldt Research Prize for his influential contributions to many different areas of geometry. Sturmfels has been pivotal in defining the research agenda for a new and active area called "Tropical Geometry", which connects classical areas of mathematics such as Algebraic Geometry with application areas such as Mathematical Biology. In the framework of this Humboldt Research Prize, Sturmfels will collaborate with the Discrete Geometry research group of Prof. Günter M. Ziegler at TU Berlin.
