Nominator's project description
| Professor. James has been a pioneer in using deep mathematical ideas for the understanding, discovery and design of advanced materials and devices. His seminal work with John Ball on the mathematical theory of microstructure in martensite has brought the powerful tools of the calculus of variations to the understanding of material microstructure. This led to new insights for shape memory materials as well as to the theory-driven discovery of giant magnetostricitive materials. His collaboration will include lessons to be learnt from phase transitions in viruses and ideas for the design of materials with unlikely combinations of properties. |
